Weekend (DJ Mix)

Weekend (DJ Mix)

That two headed camel!! I loved the way that CD cover looked when we were designing it in 1996. This DJ mix came out of nowhere with its fresh take on breakbeats, adding a trippy ethnic perspective with rare global tracks mixed with the fresh sounds of new-comers Fatboy Slim and Soulstice. Breakbeats was a new genre about to break out in full force, and this CD was a harbinger of things to come.

After selling 10,000 copies of the CD, we received a charge of seven copywrite infringements for using the camel without permission, and Hardkiss Music was forced to stop selling the CD. The images had been scanned from Rick Smolan’s book From Alice To Ocean, and he and his lawyer were not pleased. I thought it ironic that in years of sampling the likes of The Smiths, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, ELO, The Kinks and many other sources, we had never got into any legal mess. It was the damn camels!!

The release of this CD was a pivotal moment in my DJ career. I began to be hired as a headline DJ performing a thick sound of funky breaks.  I still have an appetite for these sounds but continue to be fascinated by the newest permutations and mutant combinations of sounds and recording techniques.

What I like about this CD is the tempo.  A house/disco tempo with a funky rhthym, that at the time, did more for me than the four on the floor that almost every other DJ was hammering.

Gavin Hardkiss – In A Tent In A Forest On A Hill ‘99 (DJ Mix)

Gavin Hardkiss – In A Tent In A Forest On A Hill ‘99 (DJ Mix)

Dusted off this breakbeat mix for a road trip this past weekend and it brought back memories of the amazing rave on a hill in the trees outside Eugene Oregon in 1999 that originally inspired the mix.

The entire night was epic. From the pit stop at the biker bar to the climb up the hill to the location. God knows how the promoters hauled in a circus tent and all those bails of hay. The dust was so thick from mad dancing that needles were skipping 2 minutes into each vinyl track. Good thing I had my live set on a digital drive, so the elements didn’t stop us, though it took a mega-effort to clean the gook off the hardware on my return to San Francisco.

The Apple & The Tooth (G Hardkiss Edit)

I’ve been fishing around for some strange and interesting sounds to use on a forthcoming official mix CD which will be released this summer and I came across this piece of interesting fruit.

An amazing groove that has peculiar parts that I can play over and over again. Honest to God, I chipped my tooth earlier this morning and figure that this song is to blame. Thanks Biblio. Thanks a lot.

Bikini (Gavin Hardkiss Remix)

Bikini (Gavin Hardkiss Remix)

Bang Bang are a self-described “live electronic outfit” based in Cape Town, South Africa. Four members make up Bang Bang: Reuben John on vocals; Matt Prehn on decks, keys, and effects; Matthew Loots on the guitars; and Sterra Lucas on percussion. Their forte is writing and performing deep, disco house as well as forays into their own newly created genre “saloon funktronica”.

I had the opportunity to remix their new single “Bikini” creating a genre hopping version that owes as much to Bollywood as it does to Syntharama.

DubAfrica – Hawke & Freaky Chakra Mix

DubAfrica – Hawke & Freaky Chakra Mix

Last century, Freaky Chakra and Hawke spent one evening in the studio in the Lower Haight in San Francisco. We worked on a remix for local Dub band Dub Addxx.  A remix album was slotted to be released on Sunburn Records but it never saw the light of day.

Dom and I had a good time playing with the analog echoes and this version came together very quickly.

Freaky Chakra has been freaking chakras since 1993.  Back then, there were like 5 people making electronic music in San Francisco. He is one of my enigmatic favorites.

+++ music inspired art (video)

+++ music inspired art (video)

I asked my favorite artists to listen to the new Hawke album and make works of art inspired by the music.

The following artists contributed paintings, photos, sculptures and mixed media artwork

The collection includes works by Felipe Merida, Fernando Apodaca, Handiedan, Duser, Ursula X. Young, Pure Evil, Owen Maigret, Robert Ogden, Evan Venegas, Trina Merry, Gina Bieber, Joe B, Justin Young, Dave Washer, Briejock Joslyn Lawrence and Brian Kuhlman and Araceli Santos de Bieber.

Here’s a video of the opening night at Project One Gallery in San Francisco.

One of the unexpected themes of the collection was a thread of creations that used natural elements. Fernando Apodaca, who has produced music videos for Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell and The New York Dolls constructed a piece using his own hair to build three iconic plus signs. Dave Washer created a water fountain within an intricate rock garden, Justin Young built a cloud installation including projections and a fish tank with a mermaid’s garden, and I make a plus sign sculpture fashioned from marijuana embedded in a plastic resin.

Inside Job

Inside Job

I’m jazzed about this song. It’s on the new album +++.

Earlier this year, I had been listening to a lot of African records. With a pretty decent 12″ collection of my own, my thirst for African music was quenched when I was turned on to a great website called Voodoo Funk which has an amazing collection of dj sets from Africa.

I grew up with a lot of these sounds playing live in the backyard of my house in Johannesburg – guitar driven odes to everyday life.

“Inside Job” joins songs like Janes Addictions’ “Been Caught Stealin’ and The Smiths “Shoplifters of the World Unite” in taking on the great topic of theft – the unholy seventh commandment.  Watch out!!

  • FEATURE: The Tough Alliance - Lucky -

    the-tough-alliance.jpg I'm soft at heart and I find syrupy camaraderie with these guys from Gothenburg, Sweden. Wikipedia says that they glorify violence and I laughed when I read that. I think they are the finest purveyors of silly melodic nonsense since Wham!. Find out more here.
